Students, you can look forward to an engaging year full of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Anticipation of and preparation for high school are important in eighth grade.
Eighth grade ELA begins with a strong focus on grammar, usage, and writing. Students also read, comprehend, and analyze a wide range of classical literature and informational text, learning about text structures and literary devices. Students gain a foundation in argumentative, narrative, and explanatory writing structures, and learn to build thorough commentary to explain evidence and support claims. Students practice speaking and listening skills. Grammar progresses through the various sentence structures. Vocabulary instruction, with an emphasis on Greek and Roman root words, helps students develop a broad inventory of precise words for accuracy in reading and writing.
